Our Care for Seniors, Our Inspiration

About Home Instead Senior Care

Jim Fox was thinking about the exchange he had with a Home Instead Senior Care franchise owner in Trenton, NJ. As a sales representative for Verizon®, Jim had just left the franchise office after selling a local phone directory advertisement to the owner. It was a rainy afternoon, and with that being his last call of the day, Jim’s thoughts turned to home.

As he drove, Jim remembered about how, in the early 1980s before home care services emerged, he and his wife Franny helped care for her grandmother. After spending his afternoon learning about Home Instead Senior Care and its mission to help seniors and their families, he was inspired. Six-and-a-half miles outside of Trenton, Jim turned his car around and changed the direction of his and Franny’s lives forever. “I absolutely believe it was a sign from God,” Jim said.

Jim made it back to the Home Instead Senior Care franchise office just as the owner was closing. Over the next 20 minutes, Jim learned more about how the Home Instead Senior Care network operates and lef t Trenton with information to share with Franny.

Days later, the Foxes blended a planned vacation trip to Florida with a fact-finding
mission about our organization. They visited with franchise owners Les and Roberta Farnam in Charlotte, NC and David and Malorie Hill in Jacksonville, FL.

Franny, who celebrated ten years with Home Instead Senior Care in 2011, worked as a registered nurse for 14 years at Philadelphia’s Jefferson Hospital. She earned her master’s degree in nursing and taught nursing courses at Widener University in Chester, PA. She spent a summer away from nursing to do some soul searching, then signed on with Home Instead Senior Care in September 2001, two days before 9/11.

Today, Franny operates Home Instead Senior Care franchises in Burlington and Camden Counties in New Jersey, while Jim owns locations serving Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Franny’s accomplishments gave her the confidence to refer others to Home Instead Senior Care. Reviewing her “friends and family tree,” she harvested an orchard of possibilities for the company.

The Home Office credits Franny with five referrals resulting in franchise sales – three in New Jersey and one each in Maryland and the United Kingdom. Both of Franny’s parents have worked as CAREGivers, a role Franny’s mother continues today. Jim’s grandmother was a Home Instead Senior Care client in Pennsylvania, and a friend of Franny’s from college recently began working for the Farnams in Charlotte.

Franny’s cousin, Michael Meade, and his wife, Ginette, purchased the twelfth franchise in the United Kingdom. Franny believes the Meades have a ground-floor opportunity in the U.K. and is pleased Ginette transitioned away from an unfulfilling career. “

If I can do it, you can do it. ” Franny Fox

The Foxes and their children – son Shane and daughter Caitlin – visited the Home Office in Omaha this summer to gain an understanding of how its global partners contribute to changing the face of aging.

Shane, a Fordham University junior majoring in finance, recently learned from a guest speaker in a college class that his parents operate businesses on the cutting edge because they work with the fastest growing population – seniors. “He saw that his parents were doing the right thing,” Franny said.

Caitlin, a sophomore at the University of Tampa studying international business, plans to work with Ed Murphy, a Home Instead International Franchise Partner in Ireland, on a college internship.

By investing time sharing Home Instead Senior Care opportunities with friends and family members, Franny advanced the company’s impressive referral tradition. Home Office research shows more than one-third of all franchise sales begin with current owners. Family owned businesses like the Fox’s also make up 80 percent of the world’s businesses.
